Over the moors to the truly atmospheric Whitby Harbour and Abbey from where he famously set sail to discover new lands c. 1746, or can be reached via the lovely Esk Valley Railway journey from Great Ayton – unmissable!

History and Heritage - Spectacular ruins of famous Abbeys- Rievaulx, Bylands, Fountains and Jervaulx ; Mount Grace and Guisborough Priories; Stately Homes, Castles and Gardens; Folk museums and Visitor Centres; Jorvik Centre in York City.

James Herriot Centre and Countryside (the famously humorous country vet and writer) - Thirsk and beyond in the farmland of the Yorkshire Dales and Moors.

'Heartbeat’ country at Grosmont, Goathland and Pickering town and Castle. Great fun to visit on the restored old Steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway! …and much, much more!

White-water rafting and canoeing at the Tees Barrage, Sailing on Scaling Dam, surfing at Saltburn or a gentle River Cruise from Yarm.

Walking, Cycling or Mountain-Biking, Horse-Riding miles of bridleways, uninterrupted tracks and old drove roads including the Cleveland Way and the Lyke Wake Walk, passing Osmotherley and the lovely Cod Beck Reservoir.

Fishing on the River Leven or the Coast and many varieties stocked ponds locally.

Shooting – Every season the North York Moors attracts many shooting parties for Grouse and Pheasant.
